1. Angelina National Forest

Sitting in the heart of the Piney Woods region, Angelina National Forest is the perfect spot for a summertime weekend escape with your loved ones. Covering more than 153,000 acres and managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this sprawling national forest is home to a diverse variety of wildlife species, including white-tailed deer, bald eagle, American woodcock, and bobwhite quail.

While birdwatching and wildlife photography are two of the most popular recreational activities among visitors at Angelina National Forest, this beautiful nature reserve has much more to offer. Some of the facilities you can find here include fishing piers, boat ramps, plenty of picnic tables, public grills, and swimming spots. Located about 160 miles northeast of Houston, Angelina National Forest can be reached in about two and a half hours via routes I-69 and US-59.

2. Sam Houston National Forest

A popular recreation area with sprawling hardwood forests and a plethora of nature trails, Sam Houston National Forest is another excellent destination for a scenic drive from Houston, and a great place to spend one or two days enjoying nature away from the city. Established in the 1930s, this beautiful national forest covers an area of more than 163,000 acres.

Sam Houston National Forest is located approximately 80 miles north of Houston and can be reached in less than one hour and a half via route I-45. While the drive itself is beautiful, this recreation area is well-known for the many public facilities it offers to visitors. Some of these include a large network of hiking trails, fully equipped campgrounds, fishing piers, and designated hunting grounds.

3. Galveston

If your idea of summer is driving to the coast on a sunny day and spending the weekend swimming or having a picnic at a beautiful beach, Galveston is the perfect destination. Located just 50 miles southeast of the Houston downtown area, this popular resort city draws visitors from all over the country to its beautiful beaches, its excellent gastronomic scene, and its famous tourist attractions. Driving here takes less than one hour via route I-45.
