1. Houston Shakespeare Festival

The University of Houston produces this annual event at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. This year, performances include Macbeth on July 27, 29, and 31, August 2, and August 4, and Much Ado About Nothing on July 28 and August 1, 3, and 5. Houston has held this Shakespeare Festival for 49 consecutive seasons.

All shows take place at 8:15 p.m. Performances are free, but you need to reserve your spot in advance at the Miller Outdoor Theatre website. The theater is located at 6000 Hermann Park Dr south of the McGovern Centennial Gardens and the Museum of Natural Science.

2. Alexander Deussen Park

Named for the geologist who donated this 309-acre plot to Harris County in 1956, Alexander Deussen Park is situated on the shores of Lake Houston. It features a jogging trail, 14 picnic pavilions you can rent for private events, a picturesque water gazebo, four hiking trails, several boat launches, spots to fish on piers and along the shoreline, five playgrounds, boat ramps, and sports fields.

Older adults can take advantage of senior activities, exercise classes, and a weight room at the Alexander Deussen Senior Center within the park. The park ark is located at 12303 Sonnier St. It’s open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. through October, when it starts closing at 7 p.m. until the end of February. The senior center is open weekdays only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

3. Armand Bayou Nature Center

This 2,500-acre preserve is one of the country’s largest wilderness areas in an urban environment. Armand Bayou Nature Center showcases the natural habitats of the Houston metro area, protecting thousands of plants and 370 animal species. You can spot birds, turtles, deer, otters, alligators, and much more. You can travel on the preserve’s 5 miles of hiking trails including accessible routes, take a guided boat tour, and experience live wildlife exhibits.

Armand Bayou Nature Center is located at 8500 Bay Area Blvd. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission costs $6 for adults, $4 for ages 60 and above and ages 4 to 12, and free for kids under 3. Check the center’s calendar for special events.
