1. Kindred Stories

This Houston bookstore celebrates Black authors and artists with a large catalog of literature, non-fiction, poetry, and many other works. Kindred Stories also serves as a community space where you can attend readings, author talks, book clubs, and other events, bringing together the neighbors in the historically Black Third Ward neighborhood.

Kindred Stories is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. This small business is located at 2304 Stuart St.

2. Blue Willow Bookshop

You’ll find Blue Willow Bookshop in a tiny corner space that was once home to Musabelle Books. The current owners, a family who lives in the neighborhood, renamed the shop when they bought it in 1996. The store holds lots of community events, including three different book clubs, story hour, author talks, and poetry readings. In addition to individual books, you can sign up for subscriptions and bundles which make the perfect gift for a bookworm.

Blue Willow Bookshop is located at 14532 Memorial Dr at Dairy Ashford. You can shop here Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Book clubs receive a discount on their current selection, so be sure to stop by with your reading group.

3. Brazos Bookstore

This bookstore opened in 1974, so it has a long history in Houston. Brazos Bookstore focuses on programs that help develop great writers and avid readers. When the original owner retired in 2006, a collective made up of customers and neighbors took over the store. Brazos Bookstore carries both classic and modern fiction, art books, literature, architecture monographs, non-fiction texts, and children’s books. The store holds many community events including book clubs, author readings, and kids’ activities like ice cream socials. You can visit Brazos Bookstore at 2421 Bissonnet St. It’s open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

4. Kaboom Books

If you’re looking for used books, we recommend this shop in Woodland Heights just north of the downtown Houston area. Kaboom Books boasts an inventory of more than 100,000 volumes, including everything from rare old books to contemporary fiction divided into 84 different subject areas. You’ll likely find whatever you’re looking for at this massive store.

Kaboom Books is located at 3116 Houston Ave. It’s open seven days a week from noon to 6 p.m.
