Houston, TX is just a short distance from the Gulf of Mexico, so there are plenty of options if you’re looking for a seaside fix. Next time the sun is out and you fancy a day by the ocean, hop in the car and explore one of the best beaches just a short drive away.

Sylvan Beach, La Porte

This family-friendly stretch of soft sand is just a 30-minute drive away. Divided into two sections by the central pier, this beach boasts small waves that are perfect for a swim and a wide stretch of sand for setting up your beach gear. If you’re not a confident swimmer, there’s a line of floating markers so you can easily stay in the shallows.

Sylvan Beach has a whole range of facilities including plenty of parking, restrooms and showers, and enough picnic areas for everyone to enjoy their packed lunch. If you need a break from lounging on the sand, there are volleyball nets, a skate park, and a playground for the kids. There is even a dog park so your furry family members can come along too.

Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is located in a small village with the same name approximately an hour’s drive from Houston. The wide sandy beach provides plenty of space for laying out your towel and playing beach games. Its size also makes this beach popular for horseback riding. It’s a great place to have a go at surfing, with consistent but low waves perfect for beginners.

Small bonfires and BBQs are welcome or there are several great restaurant options in the village. An abundance of vacation homes, RV parks, and camping options nearby make Surfside Beach a great option for a weekend trip, and you can easily fit the whole family and their gear into the spacious Lincoln Navigator.

Stewart Beach, Galveston Island

Stewart Beach is extremely popular for a day out and once you visit it’s easy to see why. The beach itself is well maintained to keep it free from trash and seaweed, and its large size means you’ll always find a spot even on busy summer days. There are restrooms and showers, as well as food and drink options if you don’t want to bring your own. From March to October, there are lifeguards on duty so you can take a dip in confidence.

A trip to Stewart Beach can easily be a full day out as it’s so close to Galveston’s seawall walk and other popular attractions like The Moody Mansion and The Bryan Museum. There is a charge for parking if you can want to stop close to the beach, or if you don’t mind a bit of walk then there are free options a little further out.

Whether you’re looking for a quick morning fix of sea air, a leisurely day out, or a weekend at the ocean, there’s a beach to suit you in one of these three options. When you’re done relaxing on the sand, stop by Bayway Lincoln for all of your new and used car needs.
