There are plenty of exciting outdoor activities in and around Houston, TX. Hike in beautiful natural areas, paddle down scenic waterways, and cycle around downtown to many of the city’s favorite spots. Make getting to the best outdoor destinations even more fun in a 2022 Lincoln Aviator Reserve with all the high-tech features for a comfortable drive.

1. Hiking

There are beautiful natural green spaces to explore on foot within driving distance of the city. Grab your hiking boots and head to Lake Houston Wilderness Park in New Caney, just 28 minutes away. The breathtaking area covers 5,000 acres and has eight scenic trails that cut through the lush forests and along the San Jacinto River, where you can observe birds and animals along the way. The best hiking spots are a bit further afield but are well worth the drive.

Take a 75-mile drive to Brazos Bend State Park in Needville to hike down 37 miles of nature trails through forests and wetlands. Stephen F. Austin State Park is an hour away in San Felipe. On the trails, you can observe barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, and yellow-billed cuckoos and catch glimpses of raccoons, gray foxes, bobcats, armadillos, and white-tailed deer in the beautiful old growth, floodplain, and cottonwood forests.

2. Kayaking

Buffalo Bayou is a state-designated paddling trail that runs 53 miles through Houston’s most picturesque areas under bridges and past scenic parks and offers magnificent views of the Houston skyline. You don’t even need your own kayak. Bayou City Adventures at Buffalo Bayou Park Welcome Center at 105 Sabine Street offers kayak rentals and various tours from the western Houston suburb of Katy all the way down to Galveston Bay.

Another easily accessible paddling spot is The Woodlands’ extensive lake system. Lakes Edge Boathouse at 1970 Hughes Landing Boulevard and Riva Boathouse at 2101 Riva Row offer kayak rentals to paddle down various waterways and tributaries past woodlands, parks, and neighborhoods. The 21,000-acre Lake Conroe is another popular kayaking spot. North Lake Conroe Paddling Co. at 97 Calvary Road in Willis rents watercraft by the hour.

3. Cycling

Hop on a bicycle and explore the city on more than 300 miles of interconnected bikeways. Houston B-Cycle kiosks are scattered throughout the city to help you pedal to the most beloved spots. Select a bicycle from one of the bays and ride through historic areas, parks, and beautiful neighborhoods. There’s a B-cycle kiosk on Crawford and Walker Streets from where you can cycle past Minute Maid Park to the historic Market Square Park.

Continue to Sam Houston Park and down the Buffalo Bayou Hike and Bike Trail with scenic views of downtown Houston. Explore the lush 445-acre Hermann Park from the B-Cycle station south of the Boat House, ride past the scenic McGovern Lake and the picturesque Jesse H Jones Reflection Pool, and through the peaceful  Japanese Garden.
