Five Weekend Getaways Beyond City Limits in Houston, TX

1. Garner State Park

Nature lovers will be right at home in this 1,700-acre park, located about four hours away from Houston. It features plenty of trails that follow the Frio River, perfect for a day hike. Or, grab a tube and float down the Frio lazy-river style. Then have a picnic on the banks and enjoy Garner’s incredible natural splendor.

You’re bound to run into some unpaved roads here, making this a choice location to put your 2023 Lincoln Aviator through its paces on offroad terrain.

2. South Padre Island

Tourists to the Houston area are often bound for South Padre Island, nearly six hours from Houston. Here, you can view baby sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc or go birding at the Birding and Nature center. That, or get your thrills at Gravity Park with high-octane rides.

Otherwise, you can take a stroll down Main Street and get a bite to eat. Later you can head down to the oceanside to breathe in the salty air off the Gulf of Mexico.

3. New Orleans

Dive into America’s French side of history by taking a trip to New Orleans, just under six hours from Houston. Snap some photos of some of the oldest buildings in the French Quarter. Enjoy Cajun cuisine or listen to some live music on Frenchmen Street. Then take it slow at the National World War II Museum to see some war artifacts up close and personal.

4. Marfa

If you are looking to add to your art collection, Marfa should be one of your top destinations. This arts hub is a bit farther than the rest, at about eight hours. You’ll be glad you went when you see the artwork at the Chinati Foundation or the Ballroom Marfa Arts Center.

If you prefer urban art, then you should plot a course downtown and stroll through the alleyways in search of Marfa’s famous murals. Wait until nightfall, and you might just spot the Marfa Lights that show up in the sky each evening.

5. Fredericksburg

For something a bit closer–about four hours of a drive–you can head to Fredericksburg and enjoy some of the best wineries in the state. While you’re there, drop by the wildflower farmers and other historical sites. Get some of that wine and bring it with you for an outdoor picnic at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Just please drink responsibly and never drink and drive.
